Description
An average of 8 Great Egret nests can be found each year in Tommy Thompson Park, interspersed within a large colony of Black-Crowned Night-Herons. I watched this pair working together collaboratively to build their nest. One would gather twigs for the other to use in building a nest. I caught this nice little moment as a twig was being passed to an awaiting nest builder.
Tommy Thompson Park is a man-made land structure that extends 5 kilometers into Lake Ontario, just south of downtown Toronto. It is more than 250 hectares in size. An important stopover for migratory birds, more than 300 species of birds have been documented at the park. In 2000, Tommy Thompson Park was declared a Globally Significant Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
