Description
An average of 8 Great Egret nest can be found each year in Tommy Thompson Park, interspersed within a large colony of Black Crowned Night Herons. I spotted this solitary egret resting on a tree-top, perhaps taking a break from gathering twigs for its mate to use in building a nest. I waited patiently for it to take flight and captured this launch sequence.
Tommy Thompson Park is a man-made land structure that extends 5 kilometers into Lake Ontario, just south of downtown Toronto. It is more than 250 hectares in size. An important stopover for migratory birds, more than 300 species of birds have been documented at the park. In 2000, Tommy Thompson Park was declared a Globally Significant Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
