Description
At the end of a very long first day in New Zealand, with the sun about to set, I spotted a group of five variable oystercatchers quietly standing in what appeared to be a formation. I found this formation interesting, took my one shot, and moved on. Only after returning home and while editing my photos, did I realize that four of the five birds were standing on one leg.
I have no idea whether this is common behaviour for oystercatchers, but I like to interpret this photo in one of two ways. In the first, the oystercatcher standing on two legs is the leader, barking orders at the other four, telling them to stand on one leg for as long as they can. In the other, the same oystercatcher is an outcast, the only one without the ability or strength to stand on one leg, wanting to join in but being ignored by the others. Either way, this photo often brings a smile to my face.
