Description
Guilin is regarded in China as one of the most picturesque cities and areas of the country. The city is surrounded by spectacular karst limestone formations and it is also the departure point to half day boat cruises on the Lijiang River which snakes its way through jaw-dropping scenery featuring hundreds of the jagged limestone peaks. The whole area is in a subtropical monsoon zone with a very hot and moist climate.
In early August of 2006, I found this fisherman at the edge of a tributary that feeds the Lijiang. This is the traditional raft that fishermen have used on the Lijiang for centuries, plying the shallower waters with their pole, and otherwise riding the persistent current to their next destination.
