Description
The centrepiece of Toronto's Union Station is its Great Hall. At 250 feet long and 84 feet wide, the arched ceiling tops out at 88 feet above the floor and is set with vitrified Gustavino tile. This impressive space features detail work of carved stone, with large arched, composite windows on the eastern and western ends of the hall.
From the beginning when it opened in 1927, Union Station was known to be an architectural gem: a mammoth Beaux Arts structure sitting on the south side of Front Street between Bay and York Streets. The building is 752 feet long from east to west and has an average height of 87 feet. Its centre block features 22 stone columns, each 40 feet in height and weighing more than 75 tonnes. The building is composed of portions of Indiana, Queenstone and Bedford limestone, the latter of which comprises the columns.
Designated a national historical site of Canada in 1975, a major revitalization of Union Station is now well underway, funded jointly by the governments of Canada, Ontario and Toronto.
