A major attraction on the Hawaiian island of Maui is watching the sunrise from the top of Haleakala, a dormant but not yet extinct volcano that last erupted in 1790. At over 10,000 ft. above sea level, it is often obscured by or above the clouds. The weather changes quickly here and can be hazardous.
April 2006, after sunrise, I hiked down into the barren landscape of the crater, which in fact is not a crater, but rather a valley created by wind and rain erosion over the millennia. After descending to the 9,000 foot level, the clouds rolled in, I put back on the three layers of clothing that the sun caused me to remove, and slowly climbed up out of the crater. On my way out, I spotted this scene through a break in the clouds below me.
Full-time marketing & business development consultant, part-time photographer, lifetime lover of photography. I love to explore. Whether I'm exploring the world or in and around Toronto, I like to explore with my camera. Many things catch my eye, including nature, landscapes, cityscapes, abstracts and people, but my favourite discoveries are often moments. As I walk, I keep my camera ready, adjusting settings as I go for changing light conditions, or in anticipation of a moment unfolding ahead of me. These moments can be fleeting and I like to be ready when they are.
